The Swedish site squill.se is owned by a very respected non-profit group called “Childrens Right In Society” (Bris). This site purpose is working against pedophiles on the Internet by allowing you to report email-addresses and nicknames to warn other children. 85.000 reports have come in from children being contacted by grownups and now it will have to stop due to laws in Sweden protecting anything from being listed that can relate to a person (PUL). Yes! Integrity is very important! But listing nicknames belonging to someone that is pretending to be someone else and commits one of the worst crimes, that is more important than their integrity. The Internet allows us to do so much good but there will always be idiots out there. By Huh on Oct 24, 2007 Erm sorry maybe I misunderstood, but publishing personal informations without the proof, that the person behind this information really did something wrong is not ok! I mean what would YOU do if someone publishes your e-mail on that list? You know you can’t stop that because once your e-mail is on that list it will spread in the internet. DEranged Answers: This is a problem, it could be misused. However it hasn’t happend to this date, it takes more than a single person reporting for anything to be listed. By Ulf on Oct 24, 2007 While I agree with you that children are worth protecting, I think there is something gone wrong when a website is used to publish the names of suspected paedophiles. A site like squill.se must be very carefull about it’s contents and how it is used. The reason is simple enough: suppose somebody claims that the nick “qwerty123″ belongs to a paedophile. Somebody else, Alice, knows this “qwerty123″, and happens to see this accusation on squill.se. Alice can connect the nick “qwerty123″ to a physical person, in the shape of father/business partner/neighbour/what-have-you. Suddenly Alice’s perception of “qwerty123″ is radically changed, and is likely to result in a confrontation that could go horribly wrong whether or not “qwerty123″ is guilty of anything. The only way of coping with this is to not publish any names/nicks of suspected paedophiles (or other criminals for that matter). The consequences might be disastrous for the people involved (supposed paedophile and family), and these consequences might never be known by those responsible for squill.se or the information therein. If squill.se just cannot not publish the names of pedophiles (or other criminals) I can accept that they publish the names of those who have been convicted in a court. Once a sentence has been passed the person/-s is no longer suspected of a crime but actually guilty of it. Then having their name published could be part of the sentence.
